SYNERGY
Synergy (sin’-er-je) is the tendency for two or more substances or forces to interact when combined, that tends to produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of their individual parts. A short example of synergy is “1 + 1 +1 = 5”.
Taber’s medical dictionary defines synergy as a “harmonious action of two agents such as drugs, or organs such as muscles, producing an effect which neither alone could produce, or an effect that may result which is greater than the total effects of each agent operating by itself”.
“When hypnosis and tinnitus Alternative Medicine techniques are combined,
approximately 90% of tinnitus from unknown origin achieves substantial relief.
This is a significant success rate not seen in traditional medical practice.”
Here is an example of synergy: A doctor must closely monitor the combined effects when two or more drugs are prescribed to a patient. The effect of drug A on the body might be well known, and the effect of drug B might also be well known. But the synergistic effect of combining drugs A and B - or more - can be difficult to predict. As a result the doctor must closely monitor a patient when multiple medications are being administered. Thus, the synergy of combining different drugs a major problem in medical practice that all of us have heard about, and the reason it is a significant part of the art of medicine.

There are many examples in which two or more agents or elements act in common to produce an end result greater than the simple sum each is able to achieve separately. A good example of synergy occurs in team sports when two good players are paired on the same team. Just by interacting and encouraging the other, each is often able to play above and beyond his usual ability level. Another example of synergy occurs in agriculture, when soil fertilizers are added to improve crop yield. If nutrient A usually creates a 2% increase in crop production, and nutrient B usually creates a 2% increase in crop production, it would be logical that using nutrients A and B together would produce a 4% crop increase. However, that is not what typically happens. Because of the synergy action of nutrients A and B sometimes a 6-10% crop production increase might occur, instead of the expected 4%. Taking it a step further, combining nutrients A, B, and C (each good for a 2% yield gain) might produce a synergistic effect above 15%.
Let’s say that I can lift a maximum of 100 pounds, and you can lift a maximum of 100 pounds. Lifting together, we should be able to lift 200 pounds. However, because of the principle of synergy, it would not be unusual that we could lift more than that, maybe 210, 220 pounds or more. Life is full of situations in which the synergy of team effort occurs.
